How to Convert CorelDRAW CDR Files to Adobe Illustrator (AI Format)
You've done the design work in CorelDRAW. It's exactly what the client wanted. And then they come back and ask if you can send it as an AI file because their in-house team uses Illustrator and needs to make a small update.
That should be a simple request. In practice, it's one of those cross-software moments that always seems to take longer than it should. CorelDRAW doesn't export directly to AI format. You can't just "Save As AI." And simply renaming the file doesn't do anything useful — the format and internal structure are completely different.
Why CorelDRAW Can't Export AI Directly
Adobe Illustrator's AI format is proprietary to Adobe. CorelDRAW's CDR format is proprietary to Corel. Neither company has built a direct export path to the other's format — they're competitors, and there's no business incentive to make it seamless.
CorelDRAW can export to EPS, PDF, SVG, and a range of image formats. It can't export to AI. Illustrator can open those other formats to varying degrees of success, but none of them preserve the design with the same fidelity that a native AI file would.
What People Try When They Need CDR to AI
Export CDR to EPS, then open in Illustrator. This is the most common workaround and it works reasonably well for simple designs. EPS is a format both programs can handle. The catch: CorelDRAW-specific features (envelopes, mesh fills, interactive blends, lens effects) don't have EPS equivalents and get flattened. The Illustrator user won't be able to edit those elements as originally intended.
Export CDR to PDF, then open in Illustrator. Similar result. PDF preserves the visual appearance better than EPS in some cases, but Illustrator's PDF import doesn't always give clean, editable results for complex designs.
Export CDR to SVG, open in Illustrator. SVG is an open format that Illustrator handles well. Gradient handling and some text features may differ between CorelDRAW's SVG export and what Illustrator expects, but for clean vector designs this often produces a workable result.
Ask the client to accept EPS or PDF instead. Often the simplest resolution if the client understands the limitation. A high-quality PDF covers most "I just need to make a small edit" scenarios.
