How to Convert EPS Files to CorelDRAW CDR — Quick & Free
EPS is one of the oldest vector formats around — so old that "EPS" stands for Encapsulated PostScript, a language that predates most modern design software by decades. It's everywhere: stock sites deliver vector downloads as EPS, templates come in EPS, logo packages from agencies include EPS as the "universal" vector option.
And yet getting an EPS file to open properly in CorelDRAW remains, somehow, an inconsistent experience. You'd think two vector formats would get along. They mostly do — but "mostly" is the problem word when you're trying to deliver a job to a print shop.
What Goes Wrong When CorelDRAW Opens EPS Files
CorelDRAW can open EPS files, technically. But what you get back varies so much from file to file that you can't rely on it. Common problems include:
Colours shifting — particularly Pantone and spot colours that get converted to incorrect CMYK values
Text converted to curves before you get a chance to edit it, or not converted at all and showing the wrong font
Complex shapes imported as a single embedded image rather than editable paths
Some EPS files triggering an import error outright, with CorelDRAW refusing to open them entirely
Files that appear to open fine but have invisible clipping issues that only show up when you send to print
The underlying issue is that EPS is actually a container format — the "vector data" inside can be written in several different ways depending on which program created the EPS. An EPS from Illustrator is different from an EPS from a stock site, which is different again from an EPS exported by CorelDRAW itself. CorelDRAW handles some of these variations well and others poorly.
The Usual Attempts
Import the EPS directly. Try it — sometimes it works fine. When it doesn't, you're dealing with the problems listed above and spending time fixing rather than designing.
Open in Ghostscript and re-export. Ghostscript is a free PostScript interpreter that can render EPS files. Re-exporting from Ghostscript can sometimes clean up the file enough for CorelDRAW to handle. This requires installing Ghostscript, learning its command line, and it still doesn't always fix colour issues.
Open in Illustrator, save as a cleaner EPS, then import. Works if you have Illustrator. Most CorelDRAW users don't — that's why they're working in CorelDRAW.
Rasterise the EPS to a high-res image and trace it. This completely destroys the point of having a vector file. You're starting over from scratch and you'll never get back exactly what the original had.

An Honest Word on Older EPS Files
Very old EPS files — things that were created in the early 1990s or were scanned and saved as EPS — may contain raster data rather than true vectors. If the original EPS was raster, the converted CDR will contain that raster image. There are no vectors to extract from a file that never had them. For modern EPS files (anything from the last 15–20 years, realistically), this isn't usually an issue.
