How to Convert SVG to CDR and Import Vectors Into CorelDRAW
SVG has become the dominant vector format for the web. Icon libraries, stock sites, UI design tools, web designers — SVG is what they all use. Download a vector icon set, get SVG. Export from Figma or Sketch, get SVG. Grab a logo from a website, it's probably SVG.
And CorelDRAW does support SVG import — so on the surface, this seems like it shouldn't be a problem. In practice, CorelDRAW's SVG import is workable for simple files and unreliable for anything complex. Fonts that were supposed to be converted to outlines show up wrong. Clipping masks don't behave. Specific SVG features that are standard in the web world produce unexpected results when CorelDRAW tries to interpret them.
The result is that a lot of SVG files require cleanup after importing to CorelDRAW — which is time you shouldn't have to spend.
Why SVG and CorelDRAW Have a Complicated Relationship
SVG was designed as a web format. It's an XML-based standard optimised for browsers, which have very precise SVG rendering engines. CorelDRAW was designed as a print design tool. Its SVG import is there because SVG is useful, but it wasn't built to handle every quirk of web-first SVG files.
Specific things that cause trouble:
SVG files that use text elements with custom web fonts — CorelDRAW can't access web fonts and either substitutes or breaks the text
SVG filters and effects (blur, colour matrix, drop shadow via filter) — CorelDRAW doesn't have 1:1 equivalents and will either drop these or approximate them badly
SVG files from Figma or other UI tools that use non-standard viewBox handling or nested SVG structures
Animated SVG — CorelDRAW strips the animation and imports only the base state, which is usually fine, but the resulting file structure can be messy
