Why EPS files import badly
EPS is not really a file format so much as a PostScript program describing how to draw a page. Every application that writes one does it slightly differently, and CorelDRAW's importer only understands a subset. When it hits something it cannot follow, it silently falls back to whatever it can salvage.
The preview trap
Most EPS files carry a small embedded preview so applications have something to show. If the PostScript itself cannot be read, that preview is what you get — pixelated and uneditable.
Binary vs ASCII EPS
Binary-encoded EPS from older Mac tooling and from some RIPs is a frequent failure case. The file is valid; CorelDRAW simply refuses it.
Custom fonts and encodings

Files exported from older RIPs, cutting software or clip-art libraries frequently come in as one locked group, with missing fills, or as an unusable preview image. Converting first turns the PostScript into clean, fully editable vector curves.
Many EPS files embed a small TIFF or WMF preview so applications have something to display. When CorelDRAW cannot interpret the PostScript itself, that preview is all you get — which is why the artwork looks pixelated and cannot be edited. Converting reads the actual PostScript instead of the preview.
Named spot colours defined in the EPS carry across as named colours in the CDR, which matters if the file is going to a commercial printer. Untagged colours are mapped to their CMYK values.
