How to Convert Adobe Illustrator AI Files to CorelDRAW CDR Format
Design studios rarely run on a single piece of software. One designer uses Illustrator. Another uses CorelDRAW. A client sends files in whatever format their last agency used. And at some point, you end up with an AI file that needs to be opened, edited, or printed from CorelDRAW — and the handoff isn't as clean as it should be.
Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW are both professional vector design tools. On the surface, converting between them seems like it should be straightforward. Both formats work with vectors, both support CMYK, both understand paths and nodes. In practice, getting an AI file to open properly in CorelDRAW — with the text intact, the colours faithful, and the objects still editable — is more of a puzzle than it should be.
Why AI and CDR Don't Play Nicely Together
Adobe Illustrator's AI format is technically a PDF-based file with additional Illustrator-specific data embedded. CorelDRAW can attempt to open AI files using its PDF import engine, but it's reading only part of the structure — and that partial reading leads to predictable problems.
Fonts that were live in Illustrator get substituted or broken up into curves. Transparency effects render incorrectly or disappear. Gradient meshes — a feature Illustrator uses extensively — often collapse to a flat colour or rough approximation in CorelDRAW. If the Illustrator file uses clipping masks or complex layering, expect those to need manual fixing after import.
Neither program is doing anything wrong. They're both doing exactly what they were built to do. The problem is they speak related but different languages, and the translation breaks things.
The Workarounds Most People Try
Open directly in CorelDRAW using File > Open or Import. Works for basic files. Falls apart on anything with transparency, gradients, or advanced type. You'll spend time cleaning up what the import broke.
Export from Illustrator to EPS, then import EPS into CorelDRAW. EPS is an older, simpler format that both programs understand reasonably well. You lose some Illustrator-specific features in the EPS export, but what makes it through tends to import cleanly into CorelDRAW. The catch: you need access to Illustrator to do this, which defeats the purpose if the problem is that you don't have Illustrator.
Export to SVG and import into CorelDRAW. SVG is an open format that CorelDRAW supports. Simple files come through fine. Complex gradient handling and some text features don't always survive the SVG round-trip intact.
Ask the Illustrator user to export specifically for CorelDRAW. There is no "export for CorelDRAW" option in Illustrator. The closest is EPS or PDF — and you're back to the same problems.
