What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11 (2017). It is Apple's name for the HEIF image container with photos compressed using HEVC, the same codec used for modern video.
The big advantage is size: a HEIC photo takes roughly half the space of a JPG of the same quality. The big disadvantage is compatibility. Macs and iPhones open HEIC without thinking about it, but many Windows PCs, older Android phones, websites and photo printers do not.
Some Samsung and other Android phones can also save photos as HEIF (.heif). They are the same kind of file and open here the same way.
Why your HEIC photo will not open
Almost every HEIC problem is a Windows or compatibility problem, not a broken photo.
Windows Photos says it needs an extension
Windows 10 and 11 need both "HEIF Image Extensions" and "HEVC Video Extensions" from the Microsoft Store, and the HEVC one costs money. Upload the photo here instead.
A website or app will not accept the photo
Many upload forms, government portals and online printers only take JPG or PNG. Convert the HEIC to JPG and upload that.
Your Android phone shows a blank file
Older Android versions cannot decode HEIC. Viewing it here works on any phone browser.
You keep getting HEIC files from the same iPhone
On the iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose "Most Compatible". New photos are then saved as JPG.
Have a whole folder of them? HEIC to JPG converts them in one go.
Which devices open HEIC photos
Whether a HEIC photo opens depends entirely on the device and what is installed on it.
| Device | Opens HEIC? | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad (iOS 11+) | Yes | Nothing — it is the default format |
| Mac (macOS High Sierra or newer) | Yes | Nothing |
| Windows 10 / 11 | Only with add-ons | HEIF + HEVC extensions (HEVC is paid) |
| Android | Depends on version and phone | Recent phones often yes, older ones no |
| Websites and online forms | Often no | Convert to JPG first |
| This online HEIC viewer | Yes | Any browser, free |
