How to Convert PNG to CDR: Turn a Raster Image Into an Editable CorelDRAW File
Converting a PNG to CDR isn't quite the same as converting a PDF to CDR or an EPS to CDR. Those are vector-to-vector conversions — the design data is already in a vector-compatible structure and the job is mostly about format translation.
A PNG is a raster file. It's made of pixels. CorelDRAW is a vector editor that works with paths, nodes, and curves. So to get your PNG into CorelDRAW as something editable — not just an embedded image, but actual objects you can click and modify — the conversion has to build those vector paths from the pixel data. That's a different process, and it's worth understanding what it means for your results before you start.
When You Need PNG to CDR
This situation comes up a lot:
A client sends you their "logo file" as a PNG. You need to put it on a banner, a business card, a vehicle wrap — something where it needs to scale to large sizes without looking soft. PNG doesn't scale. Vectors do.
You have an older logo file where the original CDR or EPS source was lost. The only copy left is a PNG export from years ago.
You found a graphic or icon online in PNG format and need to use it in a CorelDRAW layout where it needs to be editable and resizable.
A print shop told your client "we need a vector file" and the client is forwarding you a PNG asking if you can fix it.
What CorelDRAW's Built-In Trace Does
CorelDRAW has a built-in vectorization feature called PowerTRACE. It works — sometimes well, sometimes not. For simple two-colour logos with clean edges, PowerTRACE produces a reasonable result. For anything with gradients, soft shadows, photographic elements, or fine detail, the output gets messy: too many nodes, shapes that don't match the original, colours that look right on screen but weren't captured correctly.
Cleaning up a bad PowerTRACE result can take more time than just tracing manually with the Bezier tool. Which defeats the purpose.

What Affects the Quality of the Conversion
The source PNG matters enormously here. A few things that affect output quality:
Resolution. A 300px PNG and a 3000px PNG of the same logo will produce different levels of vector detail. Higher resolution gives the vectorizer more pixel data to work from. If you have an option to get a larger version, always use it.
Background. A logo on a transparent background (PNG with alpha) converts more cleanly than one with a solid white background, because the tool doesn't have to guess where the logo ends and the background begins.
Colour count. Simple flat-colour designs — two, three, five colours, clean edges — vectorize beautifully. Multi-colour photographs or highly detailed illustrations with hundreds of colour gradations won't convert to clean editable vectors because vectors can't faithfully represent photographic content.
Edge quality. A sharp, clean-edged PNG converts better than a compressed, blurry, or overly scaled-up image. If your PNG looks rough at 100% zoom, the vector output will reflect that.
An Honest Word on Photo-Like PNGs
If your PNG is a photograph, a product render, or a realistic illustration with smooth colour transitions — converting it to CDR will give you a vector approximation, not a faithful reproduction. Vector formats represent images using flat colour regions and paths. A photograph has millions of continuous colour gradients that can't be recreated with those tools in any meaningful way.
For photographic content, you're better off using the PNG as an embedded high-resolution image in CorelDRAW rather than trying to convert it to vectors. Vectors are the right format for logos, icons, text-based graphics, and flat illustrations — not photographs.
