What is a RAW photo file?
A RAW file is the unprocessed data straight from a camera's sensor. Instead of a finished picture, it stores what the sensor recorded, so a photographer can adjust exposure, white balance and colour later without losing quality.
There is no single RAW format: every camera maker has its own. Canon uses CR2, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Fujifilm RAF, Panasonic RW2, Olympus ORF and Pentax PEF. Adobe's DNG is an open RAW format used by some cameras and by many smartphones in "pro" or "RAW" mode.
Because a RAW file is not a finished image, it needs software to "develop" it. That is why it will not open in a normal photo viewer, on a website, or in an email.
Why your RAW file will not open
RAW files are designed to be developed, not viewed — which causes a few typical problems.
Your photo viewer does not know the format
Basic photo apps support only some RAW formats, and often not new camera models. A server-side viewer handles all the common ones.
You do not want to install Lightroom just to look
Professional editors are large paid programs. Viewing one or two RAW files does not justify the install.
The colours look flatter than on the camera screen
The camera's screen shows its own processed JPEG. A RAW file stores no final "look", so a neutral development can look a little less punchy. Nothing is wrong with the file.
It is a Canon CR3 file
CR3 is the newer Canon RAW format. It is not supported yet — export a JPG from the camera or use DNG.
Need a smaller file to share? Convert straight to JPG from the next step after viewing.
