How to convert a PNG to CDR

Importing a PNG into CorelDRAW is not the same as converting it
You can drag a PNG straight into CorelDRAW, but nothing about it becomes editable. You get a picture sitting in a frame — enlarge it and it goes soft, and you cannot recolour a shape or move a letter. Converting traces the artwork into actual paths, which is a different operation entirely.

What traces well, and what doesn't
Tracing turns areas of colour into shapes. That works beautifully for some images and poorly for others — worth knowing before you judge the result.
Logos, icons, line art, signatures, stencils, silhouettes — anything with flat colours and clean edges.
Illustrations and cartoons with a limited palette. Some fine detail may simplify slightly.
Artwork with soft gradients or drop shadows. Gradients become bands of solid colour, which can look stepped.
Photographs and heavily textured images. There is no meaningful way to reduce a photo to solid shapes — the result looks posterised.
Getting the sharpest trace
Use the highest resolution PNG you have
A 2000px logo traces far more accurately than a 300px screenshot of the same logo. Detail that is not in the pixels cannot be recovered.
Keep the background transparent
A transparent PNG lets the tracer find the true edges of the artwork instead of also outlining a white rectangle around it.
Crop out anything you do not need
Watermarks, borders and stray text all get traced too. Removing them first gives a much cleaner set of paths.
Avoid screenshots where possible
Screenshots add JPEG-style compression noise around edges, and the tracer follows that noise into wobbly outlines.

Photographs are the wrong input for tracing. A photo has millions of subtly different pixels, and tracing has to reduce that to a finite set of solid shapes — so it comes out looking posterised. Tracing is for logos and graphics, not photographs.
